More and more often you hear that moderate wine consumption is often recommended as part of a healthy lifestyle. While it’s true that some of the health benefits of wine are attributable to the ethyl alcohol found in all alcoholic beverages, many additional benefits seem to be linked to tannic red wines such as cabernet sauvignon.
Now there’s a Mount Sinai School of Medicine study that specifically links cabernet consumption to a decreased risk of Alzheimer’s Disease.
People with Alzheimer’s Disease exhibit elevated levels of certain brain chemicals that cause plaque buildup within the brain, which is the main cause of Alzheimer’s Disease symptoms. An estimated 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s Disease. Presently, there are no known cures or effective preventive strategies. However, lifestyle factors such as diet and now moderate wine consumption are receiving increasing attention for its potential preventative impact on Alzheimer’s Disease.
“This new breakthrough is another step forward in Alzheimer’s research at Mount Sinai and across the globe for this growing health concern that has devastating effects,” say Giulio Maria Pasinetti, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience, Director of the Neuroinflammation Research Center at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and lead author of the study and Dr. Jun Wang, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and co-Author of the study. “These findings give researchers and millions of families a glimpse of light at the end of the long dark tunnel for future prevention of this disease.”
The study shows that mice dosed with cabernet-infused water had distinctly less build-up of the harmful protein that ultimately “clogs” the human brain in Alzheimer’s patients. These mice also demonstrated less memory loss than the control group of mice who received only water. These additional benifits, particualy spatial memory retention, were seemingly linked to not just wine consumption, but specifically cabernet sauvignon.
