One of the greatest Halloween Rituals is watching the Jimmy Kimmel segment “I Told My Kids I Ate All Their Halloween Candy.” If you have never seen it, I urge you to watch it and be amused. The premise for the segment is exactly what the name suggests, parents tell their kids the day after Halloween that they ate all of their candy and record their reactions. It is somewhat of a cruel joke to play on your kids but definitely provides a good laugh.
Whether you plan on snatching some of your kid’s candy or spending your Halloween party hopping, there is a good chance you will be indulging on some sweets. Well I am here to tell you that those sweets pair very nicely with wine! Ah, yes there are perks to being an adult on Halloween. Here are our favorite candy/wine pairings…
Sour Patch Kids will pair very nicely with our 2015 Riesling. A candy that is “first sweet, then sour” definitely needs something that is a little bit more crisp and fresh and not at all sour. The Riesling has fresh hints of peach and kiwi on the palate and an acidic citrusy zest on the finish, which helps kick the tartness from the Sour Patch Kids, making a delightful pairing.
We like to pair our 2015 Dry Pinot Grigio with Skittles. Our Dry Pinot Grigio has 0% residual sugar. If you got the chance to read our last blog post, you know that residual sugar is the left over sugar after fermentation. The bone dry, acidic, Pinot Grigio has bright flavors of grapefruit and green apple that plays well with the super sweet flavors of the Skittles.
Candy Corn goes perfectly with our 2015 Chardonnay. Not everyone likes Candy Corn, probably because of the intense sweetness. But I promise that anyone that doesn’t like Candy Corn, hasn’t tried it with our barrel-aged Chardonnay. The wine has a great buttery, oaky flavor from 6 months of aging in the barrel along with caramel apple and hazelnut tones that create a wonderful composition for enjoying with candy corn.
We love our chocolate bars like we love our 2014 Signature Series Tempranillo, so why not pair these together to make an unstoppable duo. Snickers bars pair nicely with medium-bodied reds, like the Tempranillo. The long lasting vanilla tannins on the finish and the mocha, cinnamon spice aromas make for a wine with great depth that won’t be overpowered by the salty peanuts and creamy chocolate. Also, check out our 2013 Merlot as well!
The 2013 Quill should be enjoyed with M&M’s. Quill is a complex, full-bodied, Bordeaux styled blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec that tastes of cherries and chocolate. The basic, candy-coated chocolate does not take away from the complexity of the wine, but will intensify the chocolaty flavors on your palate.
BONUS: Hershey’s Chocolate bars pair very well with almost any of our wines!
We hope everyone has a safe and Happy Halloween, and may it be filled with candy and wine! You can stop by anytime to pick up some Hawk Haven wine to pair with your candy. We are open everyday from 11am-5pm and 11am-6pm on Saturdays. Feel free to bring some candy to share with us too!
